Air drying your face is not automatically harmful, but leaving skin to dry completely before moisturising may leave it feeling tight. Here is a gentler post-cleanse routine.
You have cleansed your face, rinsed it, and now you are waiting for it to dry on its own before applying skincare. It sounds like a gentle choice. But if your skin often feels tight, dry or uncomfortable after washing, this small step in your routine may be worth rethinking.
Let’s be clear: air drying your face once in a while does not automatically “destroy” your skin barrier. The bigger picture is how you cleanse, dry and moisturise. Dermatologists recommend patting the face dry with a soft towel and applying moisturiser when skin is still slightly damp. That helps keep the routine gentle and gives moisturiser water to help hold on to.
What does your skin barrier do?
Your skin barrier is the outermost part of your skin. It helps keep water in and protect your skin from everyday irritants. When it is unhappy, skin may feel dry, tight, flaky or more sensitive than usual. Those signs can have many causes, including weather, over-cleansing, harsh products or a skin condition; they cannot be blamed on air drying alone.
What happens when you leave your face to dry?
After cleansing, some water remains on the surface of your skin. As it evaporates, your skin may feel tight or dry, particularly if your skin is already dry or sensitive, or the air around you is cold and dry. Air drying is not necessarily damaging in itself, but letting your face become completely dry before applying moisturiser can mean missing the simple opportunity to moisturise while skin is still slightly damp.
A small study examined different washing and drying practices and found that washing and towel drying affected skin-barrier measurements. It did not establish that air drying your face at home “destroys” the barrier, and it was not a face-specific study. So the takeaway is not to panic about air drying: it is to keep cleansing and drying gentle, and follow with moisturiser if your skin needs it.
The towel matters too
The answer is not to scrub your face with any towel that happens to be nearby. Rubbing can irritate skin, and a towel used for hands or the body may not be the cleanest choice for your face. Choose a clean, soft towel or a fresh single-use face towel, and gently press or pat away excess water. Avoid rubbing, dragging or using a rough fabric.
A gentler after-cleansing routine
1. Cleanse with a gentle product and lukewarm water.
2. Use a clean, soft towel or fresh face towel to gently pat away excess water.
3. Leave your skin slightly damp rather than waiting until it feels completely dry.
4. Apply a moisturiser suited to your skin. If you are acne-prone, look for a non-comedogenic option.
5. If your skin is persistently irritated, very dry, or stings when you apply products, speak with a GP or a qualified dermatologist.
Your skin does not need a complicated routine to feel comfortable. A gentle cleanse, a clean way to dry your face, and moisturiser when needed can make your everyday routine kinder to your skin.
